Bible Question (short): Hoshea turned to Egypt for help

Question (full): Hoshea was Israel's last king. He reigned 9 years and refused to pay tribute to Assyria. This paying of tribute had started during the reign of Menahem. Hoshea's predecessor . Hoshea turned to Egypt for help at a time when Egypt was in no position to help . I need help in explaining what happened as a result (2king 17-5-18) thanks
