AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 29:11 The entire vision [of all these things] will be to you like the words of a scroll that is sealed, which they give to one who can read, saying, "Read this, please," he shall say, "I cannot, for it is sealed." |
Bible Question: What is meant by the sealed book, I'm not aware of any? this is found in Isaih 29:11 |
Bible Answer: Hi Historian, This "sealed book" is being used as a figure of speech: Isa 29:11 "And the whole vision to you is like the words of a sealed book which they give to one knowing books, saying, Please read this. Then he says, I am not able, for it is sealed. 12 And the book is given to one who does not know books, saying, Please read this. Then he says, I do not know books." The prophet says "the vision is LIKE the words of a sealed book", and he goes on to explain that he means it will not be understood, whether you "know books", can read, or not. Those to whom the prophecy is give won't understand it, not because they lack the ability or not, but because of their hypocrisy. To those who do not wish to know God, God sometimes makes Himself unknowable to them. This was also true of the Pharisees in the New Testament. After they had chosen to reject Jesus as the Messiah, it was said of them that they could not believe. There are several examples of this in the Bible. When man hardens his heart to God, God may harden man's heart permanently. This is prophesied for the end of the age also, as those who "refused to love the truth will be given a strong delusion, that they would believe the lie". (See 2 Thess. 2) This is how God sometimes reserves people to judgement, declaring that the opportunity for their believing has ended. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
