NASB | Ecclesiastes 12:13 ¶ The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ecclesiastes 12:13 ¶ When all has been heard, the end of the matter is: fear God [worship Him with awe-filled reverence, knowing that He is almighty God] and keep His commandments, for this applies to every person. |
Bible Question: The NASB phrasing in Ecclesiastes 12:13 "because this applies to every person" strikes me as curious. Most versions render it "this is the whole [duty] of man" or something very similiar. What's your exegesis? |
Bible Answer: "All has been heard: the end of the matter is: Fear God [revere and worship Him, knowing that He is] and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man [the full, original purpose of his creation, the object of God's providence, the root of character, the foundation of all happinness, the adjustment to all inharmonious circumstances and conditions under the sun] and the whole [duty] for every man."
