Bible Question: Who was Ecclesiastes in the Bible ? What it a man or a woman ? |
Bible Answer: My understanding is that Ecclesiastes is a title, not a proper name. It means, "Preacher" (or "Teacher," as in the NIV). The word Ecclesiates is the Greek translation of the Hebrew title, Qoheleth, which means, "one who convenes and speaks at an assemlby," or, "one who calls or gathers" the people. Ecclesiastes is derived from the greek word "ekklesia," which is translated, "assemlby" or "congregation" in the NT. The "Preacher," or, "Eclesiastic" is most likely King Solomon, based on several passages throughout the book that strongly point to his authorship such as: "son of David, King in Jerusalem" (1:1) and "king over Israel in Jerusalem (1:12) among others. Hope this helps. |
