Bible Question (short): what the scriptures say about suicide |
Question (full): My boyfriend took his life this past June at the age of 47. He was dealing with a variety of problems including unemployment, financial problems and what he perceived to be an estrangement from his children following his divorce. He did not have alcohol or drug problems, but he was taking anti-depressants which I believe contributed significantly to his emotional state at the time of his death. My question concerns his mother and her insistence that "God called him home" after all the hurt and humiliation he suffered following his divorce. She feels that her son would have never been able to recover from all his loses in life and that mercifully, God called him home. I do not feel there is any scriptural basis for God calling on anyone to end their life, no matter what the situation. What's more, if my boyfriend's mother is right, that would mean that God planned for me to go through all this suffering as well. I do not want to add to her grief by challenging her beliefs, but I would very much appreciate hearing from your group on this matter. Thank you, Teresa Wright |
