Bible Question: What is "a flattering tongue"? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Cecil... Welcome to the forum! This proverb is explaining the superiority of rebuke, to empty words of phrase. Rebuke has at its roots the desire to bring to bear the truth on a misunderstanding, error, or behavior in order to help a person be better in line with the godly life they purport to live. Flattery seeks to stroke the ego of a person in order to obtain their favor. Compare with: "Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning." (Proverbs 9:8-9 ESV) "Better is open rebuke than hidden love." (Proverbs 27:5 ESV) "Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered." (Proverbs 28:26 ESV) Our motives in rebuke are to bring blessing through correction, that our God will be glorified. The nature of a man -- be he fool or be he wise -- is always revealed in how they respond to the rebuke. In Him, Doc |
