AMPLIFIED 2015 | Proverbs 28:20 A faithful (right-minded) man will abound with blessings, But he who hurries to be rich will not go unpunished. [Prov 13:11; 20:21; 23:4; 1 Tim 6:9] |
Bible Question: My son asked me why gambling is wrong and where can that be found in the Bible. I have searched some and have come up empty. Please offer any help. Thanks! and God Bless you!!! |
Bible Answer: Hi starfishswims, There is nothing said in the Bible directly about gambling. These are some principles that I think apply: Prov 28:20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, But he who makes haste to be rich will not go unpunished. For many, gambling is seen as "an easy/quick way to wealth". God does not approve of the "get rich quick" mentality. He intends us to faithfully work at the task He has appointed us to, and to allow Him to provide for us. Deut 8:18 "But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Prov 10:22 It is the blessing of the LORD that makes rich, And He adds no sorrow to it. Have you seen the news shows reporting how many lottery winners' lives are ruined by their sudden wealth? That happens a lot. Not to mention that we are to consider what we possess to be a stewardship from the Lord. Is gambling with someone else's money a responsible thing to do? But the biggest problem with gambling is the risk of addiction. 1 Cor 10:23 All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. Just because its allowed doesn't mean its good for you. 1 Cor 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. We are not to be brought under the power of anything, including the compulsion to gamble. Considering the potential for gambling addiction, I consider it to be risky behavior. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
