NASB Proverbs 27:5 Better is open rebuke
Than love that is concealed.
AMPLIFIED 2015 Proverbs 27:5 Better is an open reprimand [of loving correction]
Than love that is hidden. [Prov 28:23; Gal 2:14]

Bible Question:  what does it mean and what context is it in?

Bible Answer:  This does not mean public rebuke, because Christ tells us:

Matthew 18:15 If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

Instead, I take it to mean that we are to be plain and open to our brother when bringing their attention to a trespass without making it sound worse than it was or better than it was. Letting another person know about their fault kindly in this way shows a greater love than is exhibited by silence.
