NASB | Proverbs 27:5 Better is open rebuke Than love that is concealed. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Proverbs 27:5 Better is an open reprimand [of loving correction] Than love that is hidden. [Prov 28:23; Gal 2:14] |
Bible Question: what does it mean and what context is it in? |
Bible Answer: This does not mean public rebuke, because Christ tells us: Matthew 18:15 If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. Instead, I take it to mean that we are to be plain and open to our brother when bringing their attention to a trespass without making it sound worse than it was or better than it was. Letting another person know about their fault kindly in this way shows a greater love than is exhibited by silence. |
