AMPLIFIED 2015 | Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the LORD. |
Subject: Not about gambling: about God's will. |
Bible Note: This verse isn't about gambling, I don't believe. Consider the following commentary quoted from Zondervan's NIV "Life Application Sutdy Bible." "The lot was almost always used in ceremonial settings and was the common method for determining God's will. Several important events occurred by lot, including the identification of Achan as the man who had sinned (Joshua 7:14), the division of the promised land among the tribes (Joshua 14:2), and the selection of the first king for the nation (1 Samuel 10:16-26)." I'm also thinking about what we read in the Amplified: "...the decision is wholly of the Lord [even the events that seem accidental are really ordered by Him]." Even though it can seem like casting a lot is just leaving something to chance, I believe that the practice of the time was prayerful, ceremonial, and intended to discover the will of God. Check out Acts 1:23-26, when Peter and the apostles used lots to discover the Lord's choice for a new apostle to replace Judas: they prayed first. We see from this that the practice was still used during New Testament times, before the Holy Spirit was given on the Day of Pentecost. However, I have not yet studied further to determine whether it was still in use after the Gift of the Holy Ghost was given. |
