Bible Question:
Please help me, I am in a moral dilema about divorce. Here it is in a nutshell. My wife of 11 years had an affair 18 months ago and is completely unrepentant. She is bent on filing and taking our 3 kids with her to a town 75 miles away from all of their support. I am the primary caregiver of our house and just cannot bear the thought of seeing my kids grow up in a house that has mom living in full rebelion to God. Recently we went before the pastor of our church and he asked her if there was any hope. She said no. He told her that there would be consequences to her actions and she said fine. I asked my lawyer what I can do to keep her from removing the kids and cleaning out our house. He said all I can do is file for a divorce on her. I talked to my pastor about doing this and he says that I have the biblical right. I talked to another pastor and he tells me it need to be an ongoing affair to be a biblical right. I am torn between doing what really wants of me. I dont know. I need to protect my kids but I dont want to displease God. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. thank you. |
Bible Answer: Your concern over not pleasing God by also filing for divorce is noble but naive. God will forgive you. God will also forgive her, but... It appears you wife is divorcing you. I don't know what the laws of your state are but one scripture comes to mind. Proverbs 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous. If your wife is intent on your financal ruin to hurt you, what she may not realize or care about is that she is recking the financial future of your children. You, in my opinion, should take steps to preserve your estate for the future of your children. Divorce is not what God intended but God will not force someone to be married against their will. The state will most likely grant her a divorce and if you don't protect yourself and your kids legaly it will most likely make things like collage money for them evaporate. You may have to do legal battle to keep some of what you have built together during these 11 years. It has been my observation that many (starting with my own mother) divorced women treat child support/alimony as excess income. Once the court awards it, it is very difficult or impossible to get it back. Now your motive is, in my opinion, very importatnt. You need to do this for your children and not to "get even" with your wife. |
