Bible Question: We are debating the death penalty in school. I am really confussed whether or not putting someone to death is appropriate in the eyes of the Lord. In Exodus 21, it says that it is ok. But the ten commaments also in Exodus tells us that it is a sin to kill. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Lostsheep! The problem that most people have with this question is that they fail to distinguish between 'murder' and 'capital punishment'. Murder, the personal taking of a life for one's own reasons, is condemned and outlawed in Scripture. Capital punishment, the corporate taking of a life as punishment for certain sins, is not condemned or forbidden in Scripture. In fact, it is commanded in the Old Testament. Ex. 21:12 commands death as the penalty for purposefully taking someone else's life. So, the best way to understand Ex. 20:13 would be that it forbids 'murder', not 'all kinds of killing'. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
