NASB | Exodus 10:20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Exodus 10:20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart [so that it was even more resolved and obstinate], and he did not let the Israelites go. |
Bible Question: Do you know any explanation(s) why God hardened Pharaoh's heart, so he[pharaoh] wouldn't let the Israelites go?(Exodus 10:20) except for the reason stated in Romans 9:16-18. I thought everyone suffered, including the Israelites. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Thao, Exodus 10:20 "But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go." [Webster] [Webster] - 1833 Webster Bible "V. Pharaoh's return to his impious resolution again not to let the people go (v.20), through the righteous hand of God upon him, hardening his heart, and confirming him in his obstinacy. Note, Those that have often baffled their convictions, and stood it out against them, forfeit the benefit of them, and are justly given up to those lusts of their own hearts which (how strong soever their convictions) prove too strong for them." (1) Yes, Romans 9:16-18 does have something to say about this passage (Exodus 10:20), but, as one who does not speak as a Calvinist, I would respond to Exodus 10:20 by saying that the Lord "confirmed" Pharoah's actions, since He foreknew in His omniscience and sovereignty the reactions and choices that Pharoah would eventually make. The Lord "confirmed" Pharoah's actions, not "hardening" his heart in order to increase oppression, but by confronting Pharoah with a power greater than his own. I read this more as a 'confirmation' or notation of the expression that Pharoah would have in this situation. Pharoah would choose to back away from his promise, and God knew it beforehand, confirming the strength of his resolve, and not by "adding" to Pharoah's obstinance in any way, except by confronting Pharoah squarely with the truth of His power and presence. Blessings to you, Makarios (1) Matthew Henry's Unabridged Commentary |
