NASB | Psalm 8:5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Psalm 8:5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. |
Bible Question: Why did NASB translators translate "Elohim" as "God" (as against "the angels") in Psalm 8:5 when its parallel passage in Heb.2:7,9 correctly says "the angels"? Is it enough to just put it in the notes when it clearly should be the actual scripture text? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Cephas! We can't really answer for the translators of the NASB, but I think I know why they did what they did. :-) The problem here lies in the difference between translation and interpretation. Heb. 2:7, 9 clearly uses the word 'Angel' in the Greek text. However, Ps. 8:5 uses the word 'elohim', which normally is translated as God. Based upon Heb. 2:7, 9, we KNOW what Ps. 8:5 means, but it is not appropriate to interpret the passage when translating it. Therefore, they simply translated the verse in accordance with what the text actually says. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
