Bible Question:
Is there anywhere in the Bible where there is mentioned a smell, aroma, fragrance occuring when in corporate prayer, praise and worship, etc? The reason I ask this question is that both mum and I have smelt a sweet smelling aroma. To mum the aroma was like incence that was sweet but not sickly. When she smelt it she felt calm. To me the aroma was like a beautiful expensensive purfume that I had never smelt before. It was a purfume that you could never put in a bottle. It was as said a sweet smell, it wasn't sickly. When I smelt it I felt a spirit of calmness, quietness, and peacefulness. I can only remember smelling it this once but mum has smelt it twice. The times that it has been smelt was a during church service when the congregation was in deep prayer and worship. The other time mum smelt it she can't remember where or when except that it was during corporate prayer, praise or worship. When its been smelt there has been a real feeling of the closeness of God. I feel definately something spiritual. The purfume was only around briefly and Mum and I smelt it at the same time (we asked each other after the service). Most of the congregation was out the front being prayed for or praying, mum and I remained in our seats praying and of those that were left in the seats were not close enough for us to smell if they had purfume on or not. This was a truely unique experience. I have tried to find in the bible any reference to what it could have been, but have come up with nothing. We have asked my cousin and her husband who are Christian and whose church that we smelt the aroma in, but they have come up with the same as us. We asked our pastor and other members of our church if they had come across anything in the Bible but the results have been the same. They even searched in the bible and asked others but again not a thing! We know not to base our belief or faith on this event but were just curiose as to what it was and if there was any reference to it. If anyone could help us out by giving us a scripture reference or if you've had a similar experience that would be great. |
Bible Answer: This writer is not aware of any record in the Bible of an aroma occurring during corporate prayer, or praise or worship. The closest to that is the record in Genesis 8 when Noah offered a sacrifice and God smelled a pleasing aroma. Of course the sacrifices offered under the Old Covenant we often described as yielding a sweet savor unto the LORD. But now it was you and your mother who were sensing that aroma. There is a natural explanation for this, a memory associated with a previous experience. You have beautiful memories of times when you were close to God. From time to time you may experience new ones that are similar. You recall the old ones. That's all. When an experience is stored in memory it is a total experience, including sights and sounds and, yes, smells. When you recall, either voluntarily or not, you are retrieving some or all of them. It would not be unusual for you and your mother to have stored memories of different odors when you had a particular experience together, probably in church. That is the most likely reason for this new experience. It reactivated an old memory. If you recalled carefully, as with professional help, you might arrive at the exact place and sights and sounds that accompanied those smells. It is a memory, I say. Nothing more mysterious. Focus on the spiritual content, not the smell, and praise the Lord again. |
