Bible Question: I am currently testing this sight as I have found it hard to find a sight that does not end up in debate over perspective. I enjoyed the responses here of love towards those who answered less than gracefully. So, Here goes. In 2003 I retired from mil/gov work on disability. I have been married up-to this posting; 33 years, 4 children and 11 grandchildren. In 2012 I was in a motorcycle accident that left me in a coma for about a month with a traumatic brain injury, shattered clavicle and 13 breaks in 10 ribs. While in the comma I developed several infections due to the punctured lung. I was placed on life support and my family was in debate and confusion over why it was being allowed. Prior to the accident I stated I did not believe in nor did I want, Life support. To see the blessings and the healing power of God through this ordeal I change my position on this. My family, friends, Pastor and brothers and sisters in Christ were by my side within 4 hours of the accident. In the coma, I heard their prayers as if they were coming from above. My view now is that God is in control and if He chooses to take you home, then man's procedures won't keep you here. If God chooses to keep you on earth, staying off life support won't contribute to your death. I do have limitations resulting from the accident, but I am ahead of the expected recovery time that the doctors predicted. Now my question to this forum is "What is your biblical view on life support when deemed medically required." |
Bible Answer: Hi, Manuel... Welcome to the forum! You have certainly been through a great deal of difficulties. Your testimony through these afflictions cause us to praise our Lord for His mercy and grace. John Davis gives a good explanation for the basis on which orthodox Christians hold to the sanctity of life in the following article: http://www.ligonier.org/learn/articles/sanctity-life/ You are correct that any efforts to do something contrary to God's will is certainly futile. Nonetheless, we ought to remember that God in His providence employs the use of means. For example, in order for us to remain alive, He has provided us with air to breathe; and He has done so well in advance of our immediate need to take the next breath. It is interesting that He not only provides what we need, but He has created us to use those things. It would be a challenging thing to explain satisfactorially why the Creator chose to do things this way -- assuming that it might even be knowable (Deuteronomy 29:29). Nonetheless, in all these minute procedures that we participate in to remain alive, we do it to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Now if we function in this way relative to the mundane means of living day by day, would we not express our gratitude to our Lord by employing the extraordinary means God has provided through technology? If the commonplace is to be done to bring God glory, certainly the exceptional ought to be done to bring God glory. Furthermore, if what we believe of the truth is not simply taught to others -- our family and the the world around us -- by what we say. It is taught most fundamentally by what we do. We believe in the sanctity of life; i.e., that life is something given us by God and for God. How we live our lives either affirms this truth or denies it. We certainly do not fear death, nor do we hope to avoid whatever affliction and pain God may intend for us. He is conforming us to the image of His Son. If He didn't spare His own Son, we certainly would not want Him to spare us bodily comfort! So my thought is that we should make use of the means He has provided for life, trusting that He will take us to Himself at the perfect time. I hope that those thoughts will be helpful to you, sir. Thank you so much for sharing with us! In Him, Doc |
