Bible Question: Why does this passage specifically use the word women in some translations? Ps.68:11 |
Bible Answer: Greetings Seeker of Truth! The Hebrew word for 'women' in Psalm 68:11 is 'tsaba' (Pronounced: tsaw-baw') which is a feminine word for 'tsbadah' (Pronounced: tseb-aw-aw'); from #6633 (Strong's Concordance). This word means "a mass of persons (or figuratively, things), especially reg. organized for war (an army); by implication, a campaign, literally or figuratively (specifically, hardship, worship):--appointed time, army, battle, company, host, service, soldiers, waiting upon, war(-fare)." (The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance) The KJV translates this word simply as 'company', but the ASV and NASB render it as 'women', most likely due to the fact that it is a feminine derivative of 'tsbadah'. Israel's victories were commonly celebrated by women singing and dancing (Ex. 15:20; 1 Sam. 18:6-7). The NKJV, NIV, Darby, DRB, KJV, LITV, MKJV, RSV, WEB, and Webster Bible render this Hebrew word as "company", and the GNB, GW, BBE, CEV, ASV, ESV, YLT and NASB use the word "women" here. - Nolan |
