Bible Question: Can one come to the truth apart from wisdom? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Momma! It is always a pleasure to "see" you! How are you doing, ma'am? It is a fundamental presupposition in Christian thinking that truth is external to us (John 17:17b; Proverbs 18:2). Learning is the processing by which truth becomes internalized, becoming what we call knowledge (Proverbs 12:1). Apprehending that knowledge might be called understanding (Proverbs 1:5). Sometimes people have knowledge without understanding (Proverbs 14:5). A fact or principle can be recited without comprehension of its implications or its relationship to other facts and principles. Yet understanding is always predicated on knowledge of the truth. Wisdom, on the other hand, is not something that is simply cognitive. Wisdom is the application of knowledge to specific circumstances. You might think of it as understanding in action or the application of truth. Wisdom never sits passively in someone's head. Wisdom is always an expressed in words, deeds, thoughts, and feelings. My pastor always says it this way: Biblical truth always effects our heads, our hearts, our hands, and our habits. I hope that helps. In Him, Doc |
