Bible Question:
What does David mean by the word "Selah" at the end of Psalm 3:2? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Orin... The local Aish HaTorah Rabbi says that "selah" is related to the word "calah" which means measured. (I found this latter word, for example, in Job 28:19.) He insisted that it is only a measured pause -- and he would not brook any other interpretation. Nevertheless, such a pause might well indicate something more than just musical esthetics, as has been suggested. If it does serve such a function, it would be interesting to do a thematic study psalm by psalm, to see if a pattern emerges, in terms of transitional thoughts, etc. That's pretty manageable since only about 40 of the Psalms contain the word. Another clue might be found in Habakkuk, the only other book where the word is used. However, given that the two sources were written 5 centuries apart, the connection might be tenuous. In Him, Doc |
