Bible Question:
1corinth 14:4 talks about "touch not my anoited Do my prophet no harm What is your take on this scripture? |
Bible Answer: Greetings 413 Furman Rd, 1 Corinthians 14:4 "The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church." [ESV] Here is a bit of commentary on this verse.. "14:4 edifies himself. This edification does not involve the mind since the speaker does not understand what he has said. It is a personal edification in the area of the emotions, of deepening conviction, of fuller commitment and greater love." (1) "14:3,4 The term prophesies here incorporates all speaking gifts that edify the church (see Rom. 12:6; 1 Peter 4:11). Edification, exhortation, and comfort result from prophesying in the church. For this reason, Paul wanted the Corinthians to exercise the gift of prophesy instead of speaking in a tongue, by which a person merely edifies himself." (2) "14:4 edifies himself. In his emotions and worship but not in his mind, since, without interpretation, he does not understand what he is saying." (3) "14:4 a tongue. Again (as in v.2), Paul uses the singular to refer to the pagan counterfeit gibberish and sarcastically (cf. v.16; 4:8-10 for other sarcasm) marks its selfishness as some kind of self-edification. This illicit building up of self comes from pride-induced emotion which only produces more pride. .." (4) "14:3-5 CHURCH LEADERS, Prophet- The prophet proclaims God's message to build up, exhort, and encourage the community. Prophecy is Spirit-inspired speech from God that is intelligible and convicts the hearts of the hearers. Prophets edify the church and not simply themselves. For this reason, Paul preferred the gift of prophecy over that of tongues. Prophecy is to be exercised in a spirit of order and not tumult."
