Bible Question: I was wondering where the practice of putting on sackcloth and ashes originated? |
Bible Answer: Hi, 4givn2... The practice of mourning in sackcloth and ashes has its roots in very ancient times. It goes back farther than the roots of the Hebrew nation. The above verse is the oldest reference. Later, we see Jacob involved in this practice (Genesis 37:34). It was also something done by ancients who were not Hebrews (Jonah 3:5). Check every reference of "sackcloth" in the Scripture to see why it was done in each case. This will help to better understand its use. In Him, Doc |
