Bible Question:
According to scripture our days are numbered. Over 3000 soldiers have been killed in the Iraq war. If they had not been in the war, would they have died by some other means? I personally believe the Bible so I feel that they would have died in another manner. I would like your view point. |
Bible Answer: Hi, Camera Man... Welcome to the forum! God reveals Himself in Scripture as sovereign over all things (Psalm 103:19; Romans 8:28; Ephesians 1:11). He is sovereign over men and their actions (Exodus 3:21; 12:25-36; Ezekiel 7:27; 1 Samuel 2:6-7; Galatians 1:15-16). This includes the sinful acts of men and the devil (Genesis 45:5; 50:20; 2 Samuel 24:1; 1 Chronicles 21:1). He is sovereign over nations (Psalm 47:7-9; Daniel 2:20-21; 4:34-35). Etc. Etc. If we rightly understand God's sovereignty, then we know that wars and their effects are also under the control of Providence. As John Piper puts it, "It is not merely that God has the power and right to govern all things but that He does so always and without exception." In one sense, all death is vain, for it is still an enemy (1 Corinthians 15:26). However, the soldiers in Iraq, fighting terrorism at its very roots, are there for a just cause. They are seeking to right wrongs. They are protecting the innocent from the terrorist's indiscriminant violence. They are implementing Romans 13. Their efforts are opening the doors for Christian evangelism. How could we ever call such deaths vain? In Him, Doc |
