NASB | Job 1:5 When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Job 1:5 When the days of their feasting were over, Job would send [for them] and consecrate them, rising early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Job did this at all [such] times. |
Bible Question:
Why did Job wait until the days of feasting had completed their cycle? -Why not consecrate his children before, or during? What was Job doing during the days of feasting? Why didn't Job know what his children were doing? Why didn't they offer burnt offerings themselves? Is there a Law permitting the offering for other? -Was Job under the Law? Steve |
Bible Answer: It could be that Job himself enjoyed these feasts also (and they could last up to a week), even though he did not know or have full knowledge of all of the things that his children were doing during these feasts. He could only consecrate them after, since making offerings to the Lord would abruptly end the feast. We are not given any information at all of the character of any of Job's children. All that we know is that Job himself made burnt offerings for them. Perhaps his children followed his example and made sacrifices themselves. The only thing that we can be certain of is that Job made restitution for them. Job was not under any law that permitted the offering for another person (I cannot find a single one), but he may have done this out of his sincerity and humbleness and the love in his heart for his family. |
