NASB | Esther 3:2 All the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman; for so the king had commanded concerning him. But Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid homage. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Esther 3:2 All the king's servants who were at the king's gate [in royal service] bowed down and honored and paid homage to Haman; for this is what the king had commanded in regard to him. But Mordecai [a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin] neither bowed down nor paid homage [to him]. |
Bible Question:
I was wondering if anyone knows why Mordecai wouldn't bow down to Haman? |
Bible Answer: Hi, the King's child! Bowing down was seen as an act of submission and worship--Mordecai was a devote Jew who recognized and served only Yahweh! Bowing down to anyone other than Yahweh would have been seen by Mordecai as a sign of idolatry... way back when people all over the world instituted themselves (kings and other rulers) as a god... as a superior beings they required that their subjects worshipped them; a public demonstration of this would be bowing to them, their emissaries and even to their likeness (statue, carving, etc...)--of course this is not to be confused with cultural signs of respect (as the oriental practice), since this is done on a lateral unbaised level! God Bless! Angel |
