Bible Question:
Esther is a Persian word and is translated to "star" in Strong's and Smith Bible Dictionaries. In Hitchcock's, however, it is translated "hidden". Obviously there is a huge difference. Which definition is accurate? Her Hebrew name is Hadassah, which means "myrtle". Thank you. MKaplan |
Bible Answer: MKaplan Apparently Esther was the name given her by her Babylonian captors The meaning of that name depends in what language you lookup the name. In Greek the word would relate to a star. In other languages it would reflect back to the Babyalonian godess Ishtar. See the excerpt below. ES´THER (es´ter). The Jewish maiden chosen by Ahasuerus to be queen. Esther was the new, and probably Persian, name given on her introduction to the royal harem. Her proper Heb. name was Hadassah, “Myrtle”. As to the signification of Esther, it is “Ishtar,” the name of the great Babylonian goddess. Gesenius quotes from the second Targum on Esther: “She was called Esther from the name of the star Venus, which in Greek is Aster (i.e., aster, English, ‘star’).” —New Unger's Bible Dictionary EdB |
