Bible Question: what is law verses grace in christianity |
Bible Answer: If you think of a road with a ditch on both sides I pray this will make sense. Grace only people are in one ditch and say that salvation is a gift, which it is, that you don't need to do anything but believe, which is right as far as it goes. Some take liberties with this and live a life that shouldn't be mentioned among Christians. Then there are the works people on the other side of the road in that ditch. And they say you must live a Christian life, in obedience to the commands of God, which is right, to a point. However many go to the point of trying to earn salvation. They do what they do not out of love for God and man, but because they want to show themselves worthy of God's forgiveness. Now in the middle of the road is the book of James. In that book James readily agrees salvation is a gift of grace something not earned but freely given by a loving God. However to be in that grace there needs to be difference in your life, you are not earning your salvation but rather the grace of salvation is changing you and you live a totally different life. One that is in obedience to Christ. Be very careful here and stay in the middle of the road because the edges of the road are slippery and it is easy to go into one ditch or the other. I tried to give you something understandable rather than tie you all up in theological jardon and proof texts from both sides. And please take the time to sit down and read the Book of James. I pray my response to your question helps. |
