Bible Question:
explain the book of James |
Bible Answer: James was arguably written by the half-brother of Jesus. It is a great work of practical Christianity. It is considered one of the first "Catholic Epistles" meaning that it was an epistle written for general distribution among the churches. It has some fascinating parallels with the Gospel of Matthew. In fact, I found in my notes the following table associating James with the Sermon on the Mount: Ja 1:2 Joy in the midst of trials -- Mt 5:10-12 Ja 1:4 Exhortation to perfection -- Mt 5:48 Ja 1:5 Asking for good gifts -- Mt 7:7ff Ja 1:20 Against anger -- Mt 5:22 Ja 1:22 Hearers and doers of the Word -- Mt 7:24ff Ja 2:10 The whole law to be kept -- Mt 5:19 Ja 2:13 Blessings of mercifulness -- Mt 5:7 Ja 3:18 Blessings of peacemakers -- Mt 5:9 Ja 4:4 Friendship with world enmity against God -- Mt 6:24 Ja 4:11-12 Against judging others -- Mt 7:1-5 Ja 5:2ff Moth and rust spoiling riches -- Mt 6:19 Ja 5:10 Example of the prophets -- Mt 5:12 Ja 5:12 Against oaths -- Mt 5:33-37 |
