Bible Question:
We are in the middle of a Bible Study on the book of Esther. Mordecai and Esther are Jews. Were the Jews not free from captivity in Babylon when the Persians defeated the Babylonians? If so, why did Mordecai and Esther not return to Jerusalem? Did God command the Jew's to return to Jerusalem? Israel? Is the any scripture that confirms this? Your comments would be appreciated. Bible Answer: God's day to you, JRLupul, and welsom to the SBF, Jeremiah prophesied 70 years (Jer 25:11-22, 29:10) which Daniel knew about (Dan 9:2). Cyrus gave permission for the Jews to return. It was not a command to return. There were three waves of returns: 1. Zerubbabel returned to rebuild the Temple (Ezra 2:2) 2. Ezra returned to teach (Ezra 7:1-10) 3. Nehemiah returned to rebuild the wall (Neh 2:1-9) Not everyone returned including Mordecai and Esther (there were other Jews there to, as you read Esther) as well as Daniel (Dan 6:2). Searcher |
