Bible Question: Can being equip with the armour of God - the girdle of truth and the breastplate of righteousnes be explain for me? |
Bible Answer: Greetings gospelcom!! In order to explain what is meant by the "whole armour of God", I'll take you back a couple of verses, to vv11-13. The Apostle Paul is telling us that when we become Christians, then the wars we wage are not of flesh, but against "principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."(KJV) So, we must cover ourselves with Christ, and all of His weapons: v 14 --The girdle of truth. In Paul's day, what men wore into battle was much different than today. They wore flowing garments, which gave their legs mobility. Now, these garments needed to be cinched up at the waist, so they wouldn't trip on the fabric. In this same vein, God's truth is what binds everything together, and allows us to fight the enemy more effectively. --The breastplate of righteousness. The breastplate covers the heart. And in Matthew 15:18-19, Jesus says, "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders." So we must cover our hearts with Christ's righteousness, that we would not give into those things. v.15 --cover your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Often, the ground a battle was fought on would have shard of glass or metal buried in it, so if you didn't have the right footwear on, you would cut your feet, and be rendered ineffective for battle. The same way Satan lays little traps for us to trip on, so we must be preapred by always walking by faith(II Corinthians 5:7), on the promise of the Gospel. v.16 --The shield of faith. Shields back then were made of thick leather, and before the battle, they would be soaked in water, so when the enemy fired flaming arrows(darts) at them, the water in the shields would extinguish the flame. When Satan attacks, and fires at us with old thoughts, or trying to convict us of old sins, our faith in Christ will allow us to put out those darts, knowing that we have already been forgiven. v.17 --The helmet of salvation. Let our minds be covered by the knowledge that we have eternal life if we are truly saved, and let those thoughts guide our way. --The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Notice, this is the only offensive weapon Paul mentions. Other similar verses: Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Rev 19:15 From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron;... (NASB) Notice also in Matthew chapter 4, when Satan tries to tempt Jesus, how does He respond? With Scripture. It is one of our greatest weapons against the enemy.
