Bible Note: Dear Bible Sleuth, The good Lord saw fit to bestow something called the mind upon mankind. This is an attribute that we share with our Creator. The fact that He has seen fit to communicate with us, means that He places a high value on the ability to think. Indeed, it is through the mind that God communicates to the spirit of His own. Although the Holy Spirit is the means by which the Word of God is made alive in the regenerate, men of old labored with "mental sweat" to rightly divide the Word. There is another thing called an "idiom." It is a method of communication. When Jesus said that Herod was a fox, He didn't mean that the man was a small furry animal. When He used the word "sleep" it was not an uncommon idiom -- as it is today -- for being simply dead. Take a look at the Scripture passages that Mark Seylor has offered for you to read. Also, do not neglect the hard work of learned men who were taught of the Holy Spirit. Often God teaches through faithful men -- men faithful to study and to live out what they have studied.
