Bible Note: Dear Sankalpa, Attending church is important for a number of reasons: 1. We are commanded to do so (Hebrews 10:25). 2. We need the ministry of the Word in preaching (Matthew 28:19). 3. We need fellow Christians with whom to serve (Colossians 2:2). 4. We cannot do some of the things in obedience without others (1 Corinthians 11:26). 5. We need accountability (Hebrews 3:13). Denominations serve some useful purposes. (Do not be deceived by those who say they are non-denominational: for all practical purposes, that position is simply another denomination.) For example: 1. Identifiable teaching: Denominations attempt to come up with an essential set of teachings regarding what is to be believed and what is to be practiced. They publish these teachings and become known by them. That makes it easier for outsiders to find particular congregations. 2. Unity and consistency in teaching: Denominations attempt to be consistent in the essential set of teachings, so that the church members can be unified in their beliefs. Thus, instead of arguing, they preach and teach the same thing. 3. Organized efforts in ministry: Denominations provide an organizational superstructure that allows them to help the various churches in need. In addition, they can work together to plant new churches. 4. Avoid confusion: Denominations are ways to distinguish themselves from groups that believe or promote error. 5. Avoid loss of integrity: Denominations attempt to preclude people from teaching or preaching error. They make an effort to insure that the people in the congregation are not robbed or otherwise dishonored. Now, my recommendation will be that you find a church that has a high regard for the Bible. Avoid anyone who uses additional authorities, external to the Bible -- either books, or popes, or prophets, or special "gifts of knowledge." What you want to find is a church that stands on the Bible alone, grace alone, faith alone, through the shed blood of Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. Such churches will teach and preach the Gospel. I do not know how your government views Christianity. In some parts of the world Christians put their life in danger by following Christ. If it is safe for you to do so, look at my profile here, and you will see an email address at the bottom. Contact me and I will help you find a church. In Him, Doc |
