Bible Question: How many times does I AM appears in the old and new testament |
Bible Answer: Greetings! The phrase 'ego eimi' or "I am" appears 48 times in the New Testament. The references are Mt. 14:27, 22:32, 24:5, 26:22, 26:25 Mk. 6:50, 13:6, 14:62 Lk. 1:19, 21:8, 22:70, 24:39 J. 4:26, 6:20, 6:35, 6:41, 6:48, 6:51, 8:12, 8:18, 8:24, 8:28, 8:58, 9:9, 10:7, 10:9, 10:11, 10:14, 11:25, 13:19, 14:6, 15:1, 15:5, 18:5, 18:6, 18:8 Acts 9:5, 10:21, 18:10, 22:3, 22:8, 26:15, 26:29 Rev. 1:8, 1:17, 2:23, 21:6, and 22:16. It is important to note that not all of these are references to Jesus being God. However, the Jewish reaction to verses like John 8:59 clearly indicates that they understood His claim to be "I am" as blasphemy. The Old Testament is a little harder to figure because several different terms are translated as 'I Am'. However, the LXX uses the phrase 'ego eimi' 399 times. I hope this helps!
