Bible Question:
how is Christ presented in Marks'Gospel? What do we learn about him through his teachings and miracles? How does he relate to his diciples? How is the divinity of Christ treated in the Gospel? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Janita, Most Bible scholars believe that Mark's gospel was the first gospel to be written, probably around 58-60 AD, because each of the other gospels add to Mark's. The other gospels quote all but 31 verses of Mark's. Mark gives us a summary of Christ's teachings. His focus is on the deeds of Jesus more than His teachings, particularly emphasizing service and sacrifice. Mark presents Jesus as the suffering and obedient servant. His gospel is a narrative gospel that reads like a diary and is full of action. He is very descriptive and his is the most chronological gospel. He records more of Jesus' miracles than sermons and more miracles that any other book. It was primarily written for the Romans, particularily Gentiles. He never uses the word "law" for fear that the Romans might think he was referring to Roman law instead of Jewish law. His gospel is considered the gospel of present action, or movement, of anecdotes. The key word or phrase in Mark being "at once", "straightway", or "immediately". Each gospel gives a different allegorical comparison (based on Eze 1:10). Mark compares Jesus with the Ox in his gospel. His emphasis of Christ being a servant comes from the 4 aspects of "The Branch" according to the OT prophecies, Mark using Zech 3:8 "I am going to bring my servant, the Branch". His gospel begins where Jesus public ministry begins and ends with the Ascension. In Mark Jesus deimonstrates His divinity by overcoming disease, demons, and death. Mark was a very close companion of Peter. He is repeartedly refered to in the book of Acts, where he is known as John whose surname (or other name) was Mark. Mark was a cousin of Barnabas (Col 4:10) and accompanied Barnabas and Paul on their first missionary journey. Hope this answers some of your quesions. prayon |
