Bible Question:
How come, at the very beginning of the New Testament (Matthew 1:1 untill 1:16), Mathew first anounces that Jesus is 'the son of David, the son of Abraham', then goes at great lenghts to show the complete genealogy from Abraham, via David, to Josef? Since Josef had nothing to do with the conception of Jezus, as teached by the belief in the 'immaculate conception', I do not see the point of proving that Josef is connected through family ties with Abraham, and then to end by making the jump in 1:16 that Josef is 'the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah'. |
Bible Answer: Hi Olivier456, To expand on Tim's answer, consider this: The Generations of Jesus: The legal: Joseph The Gospel of Matthew was written by Matthew (also called Levi [Mar 2:14]) a Jew. The Seed line: Mary The Gospel of Luke was written by Luke the physican (a Greek and a Gentile). Paul does not count him among the circumsion (Col 4:14). The parent stock of the whole human family, thus showing Jesus to be the promised “Seed of the woman" and the promised seed of Abraham. (Genesis 3:15 KJV) And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.[note: "her seed"] And the promise of the "seed of Abraham": (Galatians 3:16 KJV) Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. [note: "thy seed"](Ref. Gen 22:18) Therefore the lineage of Joseph AND Mary both came through Abraham which came through Adam and satisfing the promises. Thus proving that Jesus was of the stock and "promise" to Abraham, legally (Joseph) and physically (Mary). Hope this helps, terrib |
