Bible Question: Who wrote the Book of Matthew, Matthew the apostle or some other later Mattew, or who? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Aikens, Matthews gospel as Hank said was written by Matthew the former tax collector. However, it was probably written after Mark's since it takes many passages from Mark's gospel. Matthew was believed to be written about 60-70 AD since it does not mention the fall of Jerusalem. In the early church Matthew was the most read and quoted of any of the other gospels. Matthew presents Jesus as the Mighty King and emphasizes the power of Christ. it is written in the diadactic or teaching style which is why it was placed first in the bible. The allegotical comparison which was taken from Eze. 1:10 is that of the lion. Each of the four gospels give one of the four aspects of "the Branch" according to old testament prophesies. Matthew uses Jeremaih 23:5-6 and Jeremiah 33:15, "I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land." Matthew's book supplies the link between the old and new testaments in giving the geneology of Jesus back to Abraham. The key phrase in Matthew was "to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet" takes us back to the old testament prohecies. |
