Bible Question: Marriage between cousins has been classified as a sin and a taboo in our religious and social cultures. I have not been able to find the bible forbidding such practices. I read Leviticus 18, and it describes in detail the biblical definition of intimate relations with "close relative" Has anyone found anything on the subject in the bible? |
Bible Answer: Greetings creed! In 2 Chronicles 11:18, we see that Rehoboam married Mahalath, who was a distant cousin. But Mahalath's mother, Abihail, and her father, Jerimoth, were both first cousins, since Eliab, Abihail's father, was King David's brother (David was the father of Jerimoth). See also 1 Samuel 16:6-13. In fact, The Living Bible goes so far as to render this verse as, "Rehoboam married his cousin Mahalath. She was the daughter of David's son Jerimoth and of Abihail, the daughter of David's brother Eliab." However, the text does not give us any indication of sin or judgment because of this marriage. The only admonition that we have against marrying cousins in Leviticus is in 18:12-13.. It could be argued that a first or second cousin is one of your father's or mother's 'blood relatives', and therefore, it is forbidden to marry such a close kin. This reasoning has most likely given the most support for the admonition against marrying a cousin. Blessings to you, Makarios |
