Bible Question: In Rev 4:1 John hears the "first voice he heard like that of a trumpet" in chapter 1 and then the voice says "come up here and I will show you what must take place...". In chapter one the words of the voice are in red as the voice of Jesus, but they are not in red here. I have noticed this in several versions that use red lettering. Why is this? |
Bible Answer: Capital letters and red letters... ...go together like a horse and carriage. You ask: "Why is this?" It is because using red letters, like capitalization, is not an exact science. It is not infallible. What IS infallible are the un-capitalized, black-letter autographs (originals). I know there are no originals extant today. But, we know that neither Greek writing of the first century nor the OT text make use of caps AND lower case. The use of red letters is like the use of capitalization of pronouns referring to deity. 1. Sometimes it may clarify. 2. Sometimes it may be in error. 3. The absence of either does not make a given translation poor or unacceptable. In short, there are potential problems with both red letters and capitalization of pronouns referring to deity.
