Subject: is Jesus God ?and how can you prove it? |
Bible Note: Greetings Tara! You are absolutely correct about both 1 John 5:7-8 and 1 Tim. 3:16. 1 John 5:7-8 was definitly added by Erasmus. The only Greek manuscripts which contain this reading are: 1) Num. 61 - a 16th century manuscript. 2) Num. 88 - a 12th century manuscript. 3) Num. 629 - a 14th or 15th century manuscript. 4) Num. 635 - an 11th century manuscript (in the margin). It is interesting to note though, that the early church fathers, since the reading is spurious, never based the doctrine of the Trinity upon this verse. The passage in 1 Tim. 3:16 is much the same. There isn't any uncial manuscript support for the reading 'God' until about the 9th century. And, no patristic writer refers to the reading until about the 4th century. However, the doctrine of the Trinity is not false simply because of a few spurious readings upon which the doctrine was never based anyway! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
