Bible Question: Hello, I have recently finished a study of the book of Esther. I was surprised to find that several people believe that Esther was not God-fearing but in fact saved the Jews out of national pride. This belief is supposedly support by several theological analysis. Can someone help me in understanding this argument? |
Bible Answer: Greetings YuLing! To say that Esther was not God-fearing is quite the opposite of the actual message that is given to us from the book. God's sovereign rule is assumed at every point in the book of Esther (4:12-17). Esther was even willing to risk her life so that she could intercede for her people. And Esther's request was the turning point in this entire book! I suppose that if you took the sovereignty of God away from this book that you would be able to come up with an explanation that would say that she petitioned for her people out of national pride. But I believe that that is not the only motivation for Esther here, and in the "big picture", we can see how God worked through her to bring deliverance for His people. Blessings to you, Makarios |
