Bible Question: why did the bible said to fear god could true love be combined with fear? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Ricky, Psalm 111:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever." [KJV] Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." [KJV] Isaiah 11:2 "And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;" [KJV] Isaiah 33:6 "And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure." [KJV] By knowing God and having a fear (healthy respect, reverence, and worshipping) of the Lord, we have wisdom and knowledge, which gives us stability and understanding. Through that same wisdom and knowledge, we gain strength by knowing that God loves us, and we are to love Him also as His children, with respect, reverence, humility and worship, having a healthy "fear of the Lord" as did those Hebrew midwives in Exodus 1:21. It is not that we are "afraid" of the Lord, but it is that we have a healthy reverence, respect, and understanding that God is God, and He is to be worshipped on His terms alone.
