Subject: Justice or revenge? |
Bible Note: Greetings ekip! I agree, I too wonder why David didn't exact justice under the law regarding Joab? Yet he charged Solomon with holding him accountable. Did David trust in his son's wisdom rather than God's sovereignty? (Solomon had not asked God for wisdom yet!) Continuing our inspection of David's last words, we encounter Shimei: "now it was he who cursed me with a violent curse on the day I went to Mahanaim. But when he came down to me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the LORD, saying, 'I will not put you to death with the sword.' It boggles my mind to see such a reversal of mercy here! At the end of his life, did David still harbor resentment toward his enemies? In His Psalms, David cried out to the Lord to deal with his enemies and here he asks his son to "handle it!" David charges Solomon: "Now therefore, do not let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man; and you will know what you ought to do to him, and you will bring his gray hair down to Sheol with blood." Isn't this a contrast to our Lord's command to us to love those who persecute us? It is interesting to note how Solomon deals with Shimei - he sets him up to fail! (See 1 Kings 2:36-46) Since this has piqued my interest, I know that God has something to teach me from this passage that I need to apply to my life! God gives us examples of what NOT to do in His Word as well! Perhaps He wants me to examine my relationships and see if I have some hidden motives laced with revenge! Maybe I need to be careful to hold others accountable for their actions against me and not defer or transfer this responsibility. Comments? |
