Bible Question: I have been studying about the beginnings of the city of Samaria. I'm a little confused as the city is named after Shemer which apparently means the settling or dregs in the wine vat. However the definition I have found for Samaria is watch station. How do these two meanings relate to each other? |
Bible Answer: Dear litfire2000, The word "Samaria" is first mentioned in 1 Kings 13:32. Strong's Exhaustive Concordance states the following for this word.. "8111 Shomrown sho-mer-one' from the active participle of 8104; watch-station; Shomeron, a place in Palestine:--Samaria." .... "8104 shamar shaw-mar' a primitive root; properly, to hedge about (as with thorns), i.e. guard; generally, to protect, attend to, etc.:--beward, be circumspect, take heed (to self), keep(-er, self), mark, look narrowly, observe, preserve, regard, reserve, save (self), sure, (that lay) wait (for), watch(-man)." Zondervan's NASB Exhaustive Concordance states, "Shomron (1037d); from H8104; capital of N. kingdom of Isr.:—Samaria (109)." As for Samaria's history.. "Samaria, City Of sa-ma'-ri-a, (shomeron; Samareia, Semeron, and other forms): (1) Shechem was the first capital of the Northern Kingdom (1 Ki 12:25). Jeroboam seems later to have removed the royal residence to Tirzah (1 Ki 14:17). After the brief reigns of Elah and Zimri came that of Omri, who reigned 6 years in Tirzah, then he purchased the hill of Samaria and built a city there, which was thenceforward the metropolis of the kingdom of Israel (1 Ki 16:24). Here the hill and the city are said to have been named after Shemer, the original owner of the land. There is nothing intrinsically improbable in this. It might naturally be derived from shamar, and the name in the sense of "outlook" would fitly apply to a city in such a commanding position. The residence, it was also the burying-place, of the kings of Israel (1 Ki 16:28; 22:37; 2 Ki 10:35; 13:9,13; 14:16)."
