Bible Question: Does anyone know where I can find a good overall synopsis of the differences between Juda and Israel in the Old Testiment. I am looking for how and when the two tribes split and why and anything about their captivities and when they came back together. |
Bible Answer: Kelli The split between Judah and Israel occurred under the reign of Rehoboam the son of King Solomon. Rehoboam became king after his father died. 1 Kings 12:16 and 2 Chronicles 10:16. The nation remained divided and Northern Israel was carried off into slavery by Assyria in 2 Kings 17:5. Assyria's method of occupation was to move every current resident out and move people from other lands in therefore the northern tribes were dispersed all over the known world and never really came back as a nation until the Jew returned to Israel in 1947. Judah or southern Israel stayed in their land until Babylon took them captive for 70 years 2 Kings 24 also the Book of Daniel tells of this captivity. Judah returned after captivity described in the Book of Ezra and Nehemiah and remained in the land until around 70 AD when the Romans carried them all off in the great dispersion. From the time of Nehemiah Israel endured many occupations, First the Babylonians, then the Medo Persians, Greeks under Alexander, then various occupations and invasions under Alexander’s four generals, and eventually the Romans. Much of this time period is prophesied in Daniel and can be found in secular history. The roman historian Josephus then details the eventual dispersion of the Jews from their land in around 70 Ad after a major rebellion of the Jews to Roman rule. History tells us the Jews spread although the known world and didn’t have a home land until they returned to Israel in early 1900’s and Israel was officially recognized in 1947 .
