Bible Question: I need help with the full meaning of Leviticus chapter 7 |
Bible Answer: Growing, Lev 6 and 7 seem to provide answers to questions that had arisen while carrying out the basic rituals described in chapters 1-5, such as "where should this be done", "what shold the priest wear", "how should we dispose of the ashes", "who gets what portion of the sacrifices". Chapter 6 seems to address questions related to the material in Lev 1-3 and chapter 7 seems to address questions about Lev 4-5. Lev 7 for the first time mentions the punishment of being "cut off from the people" (7:20, 21, 25, 27; 17:4, 9, 10, 14; 18:29; 19:18; 20:3, 5, 17, 18. Lev 17:10 and 20:6 make it clear that it is God who will apply this punishment, which some commentators interpret a premature death. If that is so it reminds me very much of the penalty for unworthy receptions of Holy Communion in 1 Cor 11:27-32. Lev 7 basically seems to be a Litugical Manual or instructions on how to carrying out various acts of public sacrificial worship. Perhaps others may provide more information on the particular details of Lev 7. I thought I would give an overview. Much of this is derived or paraphrased from The Collegeville Bible Commentary published by The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minnesota 1988. |
