Bible Question: Why were shepherds an abomination to the Egyptians? |
Bible Answer: Greetings prayon! In Genesis 46:34, the NASB states, "every shepherd is loathsome to the Egyptians".. "46:34 Joseph’s plan was to use the Egyptian prejudice against shepherds to provide his family with a place where they could flourish. It also helped them to remain culturally and spiritually distinct. Goshen was in the eastern Delta region, not far from the court at Memphis (cf. 34:25, note; 45:10; 47:1-12)." (Believer's Study Bible) "The reason that all shepherds are abhorrent to the Egyptians (46:34) may be that they represented the semi-nomadic peoples who penetrated the land of Egypt periodically from the northeast and were regarded as crude and intrusive in the stable culture of that land." (Cambridge Annotated Study Bible) "Abomination is a term referring to the strongest revulsion and distaste. God used the racial and ethnic prejudice of the Egyptians as a way of preserving the ethnic and spiritual identity of His own people. Jacob’s family was already intermarrying with Canaanites (ch. 38) and was in danger of losing its identity as the people of God." (Nelson Study Bible) "46:34 Joseph counseled his family to de-emphasize their sheepherding (which the Egyptians despised) and stress their tending of cattle." (Ryrie Study Bible) Excellent question prayon! I hope that these help.. -Nolan |
