Bible Question: I agree with you. A couple of bible critics assert that there is a discrepency and, naturally, the bible must be flawed. Gen 1 gives us the chronolgy of creation. Gen 2 goes on to Adam naming the creatures and the creation of Eve. In chpt 2 some believe that God is also describing another account of the order of creation between Adam and the birds and creatures. we know from gen 1 that the creatures were created on the 5th day. Adam on the 6th. when you goe to chpt 2 : 18 to 20 it appears (to some) that He begins to create the creatures for Adam to name. Do you see what I'm talking about? thanx |
Bible Answer: Greetings Caldog, At times, when people are determined to see an apparent, alleged 'contradiction,' they will see just that, whether it is really there or not. On the 5th day, God created all the living creatures such as birds, fish and creatures in the water. On the 6th day, God created man. In Genesis 2:19 we read, "So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. .." I believe that if we interpret Genesis 2:19 to mean that God created every living creature immediately before man gave each creature a name, then that would contradict Genesis Chapter 1, which says that God created all of the living creatures on the 5th day and man on the 6th day. Therefore, when we read Genesis 2:19, we can interpret it in this way: Creatures were created before man, but God summoned or brought the creatures to him, so that he could give them a name. When the narrator of Genesis says that creatures were formed out of the ground, he is simply describing how they were created rather than the time that they were created. I hope that this helps! Blessings to you, Makarios |
