Bible Question:
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen 1:2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Gen 1:3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. Gen 1:4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. Gen 1:5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. |
Bible Answer: In Genesis 1:2, we see that the earth, a creation of God, being without form, and it was void (emptiness) and darkness was present. One may question if God made the earth like that. Remember, God is perfect, having all power, and Holy - how could He create something formless and void? As God moved across the face of the deep He saw the potential for informity in His creation. Why, because the devil and his followers had been expelled from Heaven. Now in verses 3-5, we see that God created light. This light was not the sun, moon, or stars (which were not created until the 4th day). If this darkness had been simply natural darkness, then those natural lights would have been sufficient. However, the darkness that "was upon the face of the deep" was a darkness that only the light of God, better know as the Shekinah glory (Exodus 40:34-35) could separate. The light, which is the presence of God was divided, or set apart, from the darkness, the presence of the devil. I believe the devil was kicked out before the completion of the first day of creation. Revelation 12:4 also shows the devil and a third of the host of heaven being expelled from heaven. But since we know that God created everything in the beginning, then the expulsion had to have taken place before, or during the beginning of the creation of the earth.
