Bible Question: How do I determine the approximate year that Noah lived in terms of BC? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Janlsun, According to the current Hebrew calendar, we are presently living in the year 5764, that is, 5,764 years after the creation of the world. Many Christian scholars also believe that the earth is about 6,000 years old. Therefore, if we are truly living in the year 5764, then Christ came in the year 3761, or 3,761 years after the creation of the world. According to Genesis 5:1, Adam lived 130 years and became the father of Seth (v. 3). Seth lived 105 years and became the father of Enosh (v. 6 [235 years after creation]). Enosh lived 90 years and became the father of Kenan (v. 9 [325 years after creation]). Kenan lived 70 years, and became the father of Mahalalel (v. 12 [395 years after creation]). Mahalalel lived 65 years and became the father of Jared (v. 15 [460 years after creation]). Jared lived 162 years and became the father of Enoch (v. 18 [622 years after creation]). Enoch lived 65 years and became the father of Methuselah (v. 21 [687 years after creation]). Methuselah lived 187 years and became the father of Lamech (v. 25 [874 years after creation]). Lamech lived 182 years and became the father of Noah (v. 28 [1,056 years after creation]). By this time, Adam, the first human being, lived 930 years [v. 5] and died 126 years before Noah's birth. If Noah's birth took place 1,056 years after the creation took place, then that would date Noah's birth (in B.C. years) at 2705 B.C. The Flood happened 1,656 years after the creation, or 2105 B.C. (see Gen. 7:6). Noah lived 950 years and then died (Gen. 9:29). Therefore, Noah's entire lifetime was beween the year 1056 and the year 2006 after the creation of the world. Noah would therefore have died in 1755 B.C. So his tombstone could say "2705 B.C. - 1755 B.C.". :-) But does this mean that Christ will return in the year 7522 after the creation of the world (3,671 times 2), thereby splitting the calendar in half with His coming and Second Coming? :-) That would, of course, mean that He isn't coming back for another 1,758 years.. :-) But the Bible tells us that no man knows the date, time or hour, but that the Son will come at a time when we least expect. Blessings to you, Makarios |
