Bible Question: I am unclear of how YHWH (Yahweh) is used. If I were to say, Hello, I am God, my name is Katie. Where would Yahweh be inserted? As, Hello I am Yahweh, my name is Katie, or Hello I am God, my name is Yahweh. |
Bible Answer: Hello I am El( Hebrew for generic God), my name is YWHW ( Hebrew personal name for God). El represents the common word for deity in Semitic languages although in the Ugarit pantheon it is also a personal name for the chief god. But in Hebrew is a genreic name for God, not a personal name. YWHW is the personal name, I AM, given to Moses in Exodus 3 and is often translated or spoke as LORD or Adonai because Hebrews would not prononce the personal naem of God. El is often or usually used in the gentitive case, such as: El Bethel (God of Bethel), El of Israel (God of Israel), notice the el at the end of Bethel and Israel. The genitive use is done to differential the El(God) of Israel form the other Els (gods) of the nations around Israel. |
