AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Samuel 8:2 ¶ He defeated Moab, and measured them with a length of rope, making them lie down on the ground; he measured two lengths to [choose those to] put to death, and one full length to [choose those to] be kept alive. And the [surviving] Moabites became servants to David, bringing tribute. |
Bible Question:
why did David spare one third of the Moabite army |
Bible Answer: Greetings Mysticgaze, David, King of Israel, who fought the Moabites (1 Samuel 14:47) and then later sought refuge in Moab for his parents (1 Samuel 22:3-4), showed mercy on the Moabites (descendants of Lot - Gen. 19:37), sparing at least a third of them. Thus, David showed mercy on the Moabites by not wiping them out completely, and they "became servants to David, bringing tribute." Later, in 2 Kings 3:4, we see that the King of Moab payed a tribute of 100,000 lambs and the wool from 100,000 rams. "..And the LORD helped David wherever he went." (v. 6).
