2 Samuel 21:20 There was war at Gath again, where there was a man of great stature who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; he also was a descendant of the giants. |
Bible Question: In 2 Samuel 21:20-21 and in 1 Chronicles 20:6-7, we are introduced to a descendant of the giant or Rephaim who had six fingers and toes, twenty four fingers and toes in all! Was this just a physical anomaly of the giants or has this anomaly occurred to other people? |
Bible Answer: This is a recognized congenital anomaly, and occurrs, albiet infrequently, even today. Most of the time the sixth digit is unusable, but this does not have to have been the case for the giants. Since I'm something of a fantasy fan, I'm personally fond of theories that involve characters and beings of truly mythical stature in Scripture. The Nephilim, etc. But this is little more than a pet theory and I wouldn't base much on it. In any case, Scripture makes very little hay out of any of these things, so it would be unwise to do so ourselves. |
